I receive weekly e-mails for healthy recipes from an online get-in-shape subscription I have long since forgotten. This last week featured a 'sure to love' chocolate torte that would make me shun real chocolate brownies forever and ever. Okay, that last part I made up - but, I had visions of whipping up the torte, with its paltry 1.4 grams of fat and only 300 calories per serving, and taking it as my contribution to an upcoming family dinner. I thought it would be a good option for those in a healthy mindset that would applaud such a tasty discovery. I made a test batch on Friday to witness this culinary miracle first hand...it was evident after the first bite that the chocolate torte was not going to impress anyone. How did it go wrong? Let me just share the ingredient list and perhaps this is a case closed that should never have been open.
Chocolate torte
Vegetable oil cooking spray
1/3 cup cocoa powder, plus 1 teaspoon for dusting
1 cup prunes, pitted and chopped
1/2 cup hot coffee
1/3 cup whole-wheat flour
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup light-brown sugar
1/4 cup applesauce
1 egg white
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the whipped topping - yeah, the sauce-looking substance in my version was supposed to resemble whipped cream.
1/2 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup nonfat sour cream
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
